40 Days of Difference

This year, South Street is celebrating Lent with the theme "40 Days of Difference."  Instead of focusing on penitence, we will focus on growing closer to God and to one another .  These forty days (excluding Sundays)  remind us of Jesus’ time in the wilderness as we prepare for the events of Holy Week.

To make this season more meaningful, we have put together a calendar of simple spiritual practices to attempt each of the forty days.  We are encouraging people to post pictures of themselves trying the spiritual practices on our Facebook page.

During Lent,  our regular Sunday service will feature seasonal music, banners, liturgical dance, and scriptural focus objects to help us further engage with the scripture readings. We will also have several special services and other seasonal opportunities.

Theme:  “Isaiah’s Servant Songs--in Context.” Scholars have long recognized that Isaiah chapters 40-55 are the work of an anonymous prophet living in the Babylonian Exile (586-536 B.C.E.). His writing is organized around four “songs” that describe the vocation of the faithful remnant of Israel during their time of righteous suffering and the promise of their future glory. Little did the prophet know that his vision of an ideal servant Israel would become the template for the early church’s interpretation of the life of Jesus. Quite possibly it inspired Jesus himself. Most importantly, this vision of what it means to be a servant of God offers guidance to each and every Christian and the church today. Come and be a part of this meditation on the meaning of faithfulness and service.  Sign up here.
